Concepts | Advanced Aircraft Configuration – Ein Studentenprojekt der FH Aachen University of Applied Sciences

Concepts

Some designs and concepts which were developed within the project are shown below. These are promising approaches that have been investigated more detailed. The focus of the project is still, however, on the development of a multidisciplinary design optimization tool and the comparison and optimization of different configurations.

Forward Swept Joined Wing
Concept for competition
Fly your ideas with Airbus
Reference configuration: Airbus A380

Features:

  • non-planar wing system
    (low induced drag)
  • Strunard (Strut + Canard); supports the main wing strucutrally; acts as lifting surface; is loaded by tensile stresses
  • no vertical stabilizer
    (reduces weight and friction drag)
  • short and thereby light landing gear due to high-mounted engines
  • highly efficient flight control system

Joined Wing
Concept
Reference configuration: Airbus A350

Features:

  • non-planar wing system
    (low induced drag)
  • Additional wing supports main wing structurally and acts as horizontal stabilizer
  • modern open-rotor engines
